Workflow

  1. Make 5 or more granny squares in assorted colors.
  2. Join them with an invisible mattress stitch, using a tapestry needle and scrap yarn.
  3. Add the border, tucking the yarn ends into the stitches.
  4. Weave in the ends and steam-block the bookmark.

Tip: tap a round to mark it as done.

Joining granny squares

Join the squares with short strands of yarn and a tapestry needle, using mattress stitch. Pick up all six stitches on each side plus one chain from each corner, and seam tightly so the border doesn’t buckle.

Notes

Lay the squares out first to choose the color order. Leave the yarn ends on the sides so you can hide them under the border later.

Border

It’s ready!

Block the finished bookmark so it lies flat and the border stays straight.
